Hardneck varieties - (Allium sativum var. ophioscorodon)
Notes as a single ring of cloves surrounding a stiff central stem or flowering stalk that curls as it grows. - otherwise known as a scape - Most cold-hardy of the garlics, but doesn’t store as well as soft necks. The cloves are easy to peel. There are eight hardneck types identified as the following, Porcelain, Rocambole, Purple-Stripe, Marbled Purple Stripe, Glazed Purple Stripe, Creole, Turban and Asiatic. We have found smaller sized bulbs tend to store longer. |
Softneck varieties - (Allium sativum var. sativum)
Characterized by a soft neck (non-bolting) that allows braiding after harvest. Longer storage after harvest. Softneck garlic most commonly do not develop a scape however we have experienced growing in the northeast that some varieties will attempt a scape often with low growing bulbs when winter stressed. Softnecks known for producing numerous small cloves. There are two softnect varieties, Artichoke and Silverskin. Softneck varieties often have the potential for longer storage. |
